The acai berry superfood is a small purple colored fruit, about the size of a grape, which grows in the Rainforest of Brazil, in the leafy top of a tall palm tree which grows to about 25 meters in height. The acai fruit has a taste that is similar to a blend of berries and chocolate. The acai berry has a relatively large seed compared to a grape of the same size, which is about 80% to 90% of the fruit itself, and the edible fruit pulp must be separated from the seed in order to make juice blends, sodas or ice cream flavoring.

Traditionally the acai berry has been harvested by natives who cut off the branches at the top of the acai palm tree which contain the fruit. This method was sufficient for the local tribes and families until the acai berry superfood became so popular all over the world in recent years. Therefore the cultivation and harvesting has been left to small farmers in the Rainforest.

One very important factor is that the fruit itself is very perishable and lasts only a short time after harvesting. Therefore, with the increase in the popularity of the acai superfood, the traditional methods of handling the acai fruit can no longer be used because it is necessary to transport it to processing plants as quickly as possible. All of this is now done in Brazil where the acai berry superfood is cultivated and harvested.
